Why?

OUR LOGO

Our LogoOur Logo contains the four elements of our vision and what we can provide that will most impact lives and communities.

Starting from the top and moving clockwise:
A drop of water to symbolize our focus on water projects that will provide sustainable clean water.

A diagram of a solar system, recognizing that the provision of electrical power in rural areas impact the ability to improve water wells, pumps, light at schools, solar lanterns in homes, and the ability to provide lights at night in the community which impact the ability to have evening meetings and student study locations.

The universal medical symbol represents our medical brigades and medical equipment donation programs.

The book in the center illustrates our focus on education. The most successful efforts will educate the local community members to provide their own sustainability using our training and donated equipment. We also incorporate the use of university student programs to allow the integration of real world problems into their learning programs, bringing a different perspective to typical class room solutions as well as introduce humanitarian efforts into their curriculum.

Note the hidden message in our logo. The dot-dot-dot-dash-dash-dash-dot-dot-dot is Morse Code for SOS.S.

WATER

Clean water is a basic need for human beings. When people, especially children, have access to clean water, they live healthier and more productive lives. However, at least 3,000 children die each day worldwide from diseases caused by unsafe water. This is what motivates our members to build wells, install water purification systems, and teach community members how to maintain new water infrastructure. While very few people die of thirst, millions die from preventable waterborne diseases in undeveloped countries.

SOLAR

The ability to be able to provide power to a rural environment is life changing. Whether it is power for a water pump, lights at a clinic / school / community center, solar lanterns for homes and clinics, solar refrigeration for vaccine storage, or water filtration, our goal is to provide a community based solution, provide training on installation and system maintenance and provide materials to the community. These projects also generate great student study projects, called Capstone Projects, allow a small focus team of engineering students, under faculty supervision, to use real world problems to further their studies in mechanical, structural and civil engineering. Their involvement with the community becomes a life changing experience that last forever.

MEDICAL

The SOS organization was started with a focus on medical brigades and donations of medical equipment and supplies. The focus was always been to teach advanced surgical techniques, with many times using donated equipment, to improve the ability of a local hospital staff to perform much needed surgeries in their areas of responsibility. Since 2009, medical efforts have been accomplished in El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Ghana and new trips planned for Peru and Mexico in 2017. Our last trip lead by Ken Bailie was to Rivas, Nicaragua in April, 2016. The medical team provided $426,532 in surgeries and $93,947 in medical supplies for a total cost of $22,800.
